19 Jun 2007 by Raj – Gliffy is an online tool for creating flowcharts, org charts, database schemas, diagrams, site layouts, etc. Gliffy comes very close to providing Microsoft Visio capabilities on the web.
So you got that cool background image in your Gliffy diagram you want to start decorating with shapes and text. But, as you start dropping things onto the image and moving them around, you accidentally move the background image around too. Now you have to re-position it again. This can be painful and annoying and may cause swelling of the brain.
Thankfully there is Lock Shape. Yes, Lock Shape. Just select that background image or any shape you want to lock into place and click the Lock Shape check box in the right-side properties area of Gliffy. The shape overlay will now have red handles, signifying the shape is now locked. Yes, no more re-positioning those background shapes and wantless Undo-ing.
(Warning: Lock shape can cause extreme excitement and spontaneous ogling at your diagram)

Gliffy welcomes Mike Simon!
Gliffy is happy to announce the addition of a new team member. His name is Mike Simon, and he will be heading up our Marketing and Business Development initiatives.

Mike not only brings to the table some great ideas for taking Gliffy to the next level, but he also embodies the energy to tactically make those ideas a reality. Mike’s also a great guy, has great taste in music, and he loves to bike. We felt right away that Mike would fit into our culture and philosophy.

Mike can be reached at mike (at) gliffy (dot) com

Gliffy Online is 1 years old!

Can you believe it? It feels like yesterday. We launched Gliffy Online on May 21st, 2006 to the public. Thanks to everyone at and associated with Gliffy, Inc. for their hard work and to all our friends and families for their words of encouragement. It’s helped make Gliffy the #1 online diagramming solution for flow charts, floor plans, network diagrams and more. We look forward to many more years of watching Gliffy grow, and having you, our users, be an integral part of its success.

Gliffy Plugin 1.3.0 release coming soon!

We’re getting really close to the 1.3.0 release of the Gliffy Plugin for Confluence. The Gliffy Plugin for Confluence merges the best Enterprise Wiki, Confluence, with the best online diagramming solution, Gliffy. Sound interesting? Here’s a 2 minute video which shows this product in action:

The 1.3.0 release has been a big effort as we’ve also streamlined much of our code. Here is a taste of what it will have:
- A new document manager that will allow easy management of Gliffy diagrams within Confluence
- Copy/Paste support of diagrams content into other diagrams
- Ability to lock shapes
- More professional looking network symbols
- Additional Entity-Relationship connectors
- and much, much more!

Find out more about the plugin

How are our Premium Account customers using Gliffy Online?

Many of our Premium Account customers are using Gliffy Online in their organizations in collaborative and productive ways.  We’ve seen our customers use Gliffy Online in medical research to collaborate processes with physicians. Consultants have created work-flows to share with their clients in order to get feedback and approval. Developers are using Gliffy to quickly mock-up software designs using the UML objects Gliffy provides and then sharing these with the team. On top of that, many of these customers tell us directly that they are very happy using Gliffy Online as an alternative to the “clunky” Visio or Powerpoint.

If you are interested in getting your organization on multiple premium accounts, contact us at orders (at) gliffy (dot) com, or sign up directly to get a premium account today.

Clint’s Drawing Tip o’ the month: Multiple shape alignment and positioning

Sometimes when great things happen, people often use the statement “the planets must be aligned”. Well the same thing can be true when you create that jaw-dropping Gliffy diagram with nicely aligned shapes. Can your boss say, “promotion”? So how do you align shapes quickly and easily? Just drag select or CTRL-click multiple shapes. In the right hand properties area you will then see our shape alignment buttons. You can align shapes by edges or by center lines. So now you want to adjust all of those shapes by 10 pixels? Easy! With those shapes selected, just hold down the shift key and then hit one of the arrow keys in the direction you want to move the shapes.

Gliffy in action: Some of our favorite diagrams

Here are a few of our favorite diagrams & drawings we’ve seen out there:

Floorplan for house for sale (see bottom of page)

A wire-frame for an academic tool

Nice task flow with time-line

Seating chart

<a href="http://www.gliffy.com/publish/1216770/L>Geometry solution

Green and Good stuff

Raise your hand if your garage looks like a computer store warehouse, circa 1995. Need a reason to offload that junk? Well today Staples launched its national “Computer and Office Technology Recycling Program.” All you have to do is bring in your old equipment, pay a small $10 fee for larger equipment, and they will recycle it in an environmentally sensitive way. more information

That’s it for the May Gliffy Newsletter. See you next month!

Chris, Clint, and the rest of the Gliffy team.

Clint’s Drawing Tip o’ the month: The power of ESC

Many people have heard about the power of ESP, but Gliffy users might find ESC to be more powerful. The Escape (ESC) key can help you be more productive when creating your earth-shattering flow charts, floor plans, or network diagrams. Here are some ways you can use the ESC key:

1. When you are finished drawing a line and want to turn off the line tool, just hit ESC instead of finding and clicking the button with your mouse.

2. When you are adding text to a shape or with the text tool, when you are done typing, just hit ESC to bring focus back to the object you are adding text to. Hit ESC again to deselect the object or turn off the text tool.

3. If you have an any object selected, hit ESC to deselect the object.

4. Hit ESC to cancel out of any Gliffy Dialogs (where applicable).

Gliffy Online has a new symbol library: ERD (entity-relationship diagram)

Once again, you’ve asked for a feature, and we deliver. This time we’ve added the Entity-Relationship symbol library.  No, these symbols are not meant to help you work out your differences with spirits from another world. These symbols are representative of the notation which is used for creating data models. If this doesn’t get you excited, you’re probably not a computer nerd like us, and I suggest just searching for ‘puppies’ in the image search…. that’s a lot more fun. :-)

Gliffy Online has a new look
If you haven’t already bounced on over to Gliffy Online to take advantage of the discount, here’s another reason to take a peek. Gliffy Online now has a new look. We’ve removed a lot of the extra ‘chrome’ to enlarge the drawing area and make it easier for you to get work done. Love it? Hate it? Let us know by emailing us: support (at)gliffy (dot) com. Either way, check it out:

Clint’s Drawing Tip o’ the month:Â Using the Off-Page Connector and Linking in public diagrams

That flowchart you made in Gliffy Online is getting too big. Plus, you want to give an nice flowing presentation of it to your boss so you can get that shiny new [Bugatti Veyron|http://blog.tmcnet.com/blog/rich-tehrani/uploads/bugatti-veyron-big.jpg] as a bonus. This is where embedding links in the off-page connector flowchart symbol and public diagrams comes in. In your flowchart, instead of including the sub flows in the main flow, create a new diagram for each sub flow, and use an off-page connector symbol (in the flowchart symbol library) to show the link to the sub flow, just use text for now. Now, go ahead and publish each diagram, recording the public URL’s to each sub flow diagram. Finally, in the main flow diagram, for each off-page connector, add text that is a link to that sub flow diagram. You now have a way of easily presenting a large process flow, with clickable links to each sub flow. You can also create links in the sub flow back to the main flow or other sub flows.Â

Check out an example here

Gliffy Plugin for Confluence
See! Exciting diagrams in your favorite Enterprise Wiki, Confluence:

Green and Good stuff: Terra Pass

There’s been a lot of talk about global warming these days. Given that many people own cars, fly in planes, and use electricity which are all contributers to global warming, it’s hard to know what to do. Certainly driving and flying less, and also reducing your electricity use is one way to help reduce your personal impact, but now there is another way. TerraPass helps you reduce your carbon footprint to zero. From the web site:

“When you buy a TerraPass, your money funds renewable energy projects such as wind farms. These projects result in verified reductions in greenhouse gas pollution. And these reductions counterbalance your own emissions.”

Consider purchasing a terra pass today.

Well, that’s it for this month of the Gliffy Newsletter. See you next month!

New feature in Gliffy Online: Yahoo! image search

Ok, so this one is actually a feature we released last month. We had so much fun news to share last month, I ran out of space. Actually, I didn’t want to ramble on and on and on about a million different things and have you all get bored to the point that you would just hit ‘delete’. umm… are you still with me?

Anyway, Yahoo! image search! Inside Gliffy Online, you can now search for images using the Yahoo! search engine. Simply click on the “Image Search” tab on the left, enter a search term, and you get instant images to add to your diagram. Cool, eh?

Clint’s Drawing Tip o’ the month – Diagram resizing

Tired of small diagrams? Is 576px width by 754px height cramping your style and limiting your creative juices from spilling out on the Gliffy canvas (clean up on aisle 7 please!!)? Is your house bigger than the Gliffy floor plan page will allow? Would you like to include all steps of the process but your flow chart ran over the page? Well, worry no more! Just use our handy Page Properties on the top right of Gliffy to change the page width and page height to whatever you need. Want to print to a Landscape layout? No problem. Click the File menu and select Print Setup, then change the Printer Paper to your paper size and select Landscape. Click OK and then with the page breaks turned on (small checkbox also in the page properties area), increase your page width and height until you see the thick blue lines. These lines let you know where the printer page edges are. Then just click the print icon and make sure your printer settings are set to print to landscape mode. It’s that easy! (OK, maybe not that easy, but we’re going to work on making it easier in the future)

Gliffy Plugin for Confluence 1.1.0 released

Once again, here’s a spiffy video showing the Gliffy Plugin for Confluence is use:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xYLabE6cfBE&eurl=

For each new release of the plugin, we’ll either fix bugs, roll in features from the ‘core’ Gliffy diagram editor, or add in specific features that plugin users have requested. In the 1.1.0 release, which came out February 1st, we added in Unicode support, image linking, and fixed a bunch of small bugs.

Gliffy in The Real World: Some of our favorite diagrams

What are people doing with Gliffy? Here are a few examples of diagrams that people have created:

One
Two
Five
Eight

Green & Good Stuff – MADRE

Special thanks to our friend Kathryn A. for telling us about MADRE. From their web site:

“We work with women who are affected by violations to help them win justice and, ultimately, change the conditions that give rise to human rights abuses. And we challenge US policies that undermine human rights.”

http://www.madre.org/

These people are doing some great work helping fight for human rights for women. Please consider making a donation.

New feature: Links in published diagrams
We were running late getting the newsletter out this month because we were still hung over from New Years. OK, not really… we’ve actually been working super hard on getting some new features out the door.

First up: Links in published diagrams! Many of our wonderful Gliffy users were creating flow chartsflow charts, network diagrams and User Interface designs which contained links in them, and were sadly disappointed when they published those diagrams and the links didn’t work! We have heard your cries, dear users, and I’m happy to let you know that this issue has now been resolved.
For example:
http://www.gliffy.com/publish/1140676/

New feature: Image search and uploads
You asked for it, and we deliver! Many people have asked for the ability to upload images into their Gliffy diagrams. Do you have a favorite photo, logo, or head-shot that you were just dying to include in your Gliffy drawing? Now you can, for example:
http://www.gliffy.com/publish/1140676/

New feature: Unicode text supported
What is Unicode? Back in the old days (you know, in the 80′s) computers pretty much only understood the basic 128 character ASCII set of text characters. Of course, now that there are a few people outsize of Silicon Valley who like to use computers, we have a few more characters to deal with so that other languages can be supported. Unicode helps solve this problem. OK, it’s A LOT more characters to deal with, and the reality is that Clint and I have been stuck in the 80′s. Honest, I just now convinced Clint to cut off the mullet. I’m happy to say we are now much more stylish, and Unicode fonts now work in published diagrams. You can see an example here:
http://www.gliffy.com/publish/1140676/

Gliffy Plugin for Confluence: 30% off until January 31st, 2007
The Gliffy Plugin for Confluence makes it easy to combine the power of the popular Enterprise Wiki, Confluence, with Gliffy. We’re offering a 30% discount through January 31st, 2007 on this product.

Download the plugin here

$100 off from ServerBeach
ServerBeach, a dedicated web-server hosting provider, has been helping us bring Gliffy.com to the masses since we launched in May 2006. We are now happy to offer you a chance to save some money through ServerBeach as well. Make a purchase through ServerBeach by using this link and you’ll receive $100 off your order:

Server Beach Referral Code: YHUGSH4A2J

Green & Good Stuff
Today I’d like to point out an organization that has been working hard on helping to ease the suffering of people throughout the world. Oxfam International has been involved helping communities get access to clean water, food, and shelter when they need it most. Please consider making a donation today:
http://www.oxfam.org/

For our first Gliffy User of the Month, we couldn’t limit ourselves to just one person,
so we picked an entire class!

Frank D’Onofrio, a math teacher from Mississauga, Canada writes:

“several of my grade 12 math students have used Gliffy to make
fantastic flowcharts for the class wiki on Data Management. I think
all of these students should be considered Gliffy User of the Month!
If you don’t believe me, go to
http://mdm4u1.wetpaint.com and check out the wiki.”

Thanks Frank! We’re very impressed. Here are some of the interesting
ways Frank’s class is using Gliffy:

Non-linear regression

Matrices Algebra

Organized counting

Problem Solving With Combinations

–Announcing the Gliffy Monthly Newsletter–
Hello Gliffy users! You’ve probably been waiting in eager anticipation, wondering if we would ever send out a newsletter. The wait is over, your wish has come true: Welcome to the Gliffy Monthly Newsletter! The purpose of the Gliffy newsletter is to keep you informed about our latest propaganda…. or…. umm.. Features! Products! All that good stuff. And don’t forget… use www.gliffy.com for all your drawing and diagramming needs!

–Attention Computer Geeks like us: Gliffy now supports UML–
In the mid 90′s, competing groups of computer nerds did something we wish more people would do: They put aside their differences and decided to work together for the common computer geek good-ness. The results of their efforts became known as UML (The Universal Modeling Language). Many of our users asked for UML symbols to make great UML class diagrams, and in September, we gave it to you. Gliffy released support for UML and now YOU TOO can be a part of the computer geek happiness. Of course, all good things come to an end… will AgileDraw awake the sleeping giants? (www.agiledraw.org).

–Gliffy User of the Month–
We’ve seen lots of great drawings and diagrams created with Gliffy by you, our GREAT users. Have you created a drawing you are particularly proud of? Did Gliffy help make your life a little easier than it would have been otherwise? Tell us your story! Each month in our newsletter, we’ll feature a drawing and/or story of one of our happy users. While we can’t offer you riches if we select your story, we can offer you a little fame.
–Green & Good Stuff–
In the ‘Green & Good Stuff’ section, we will highlight an organization, company, or interesting idea which we think promotes making the world a better place.

This month: GreenDimes
Does all that paper junk mail get in your way? Does looking at all that wasted paper make you feel ill? Well now there is a nifty company known as GreenDimes who aims to help rid yourself of your junk mail nightmare. For just a few bucks a month, GreenDimes will do their best to remove you from as many mailing lists as possible. Not only that, but GreenDimes will plant one tree a month as a part of their low subscription fee. What a great idea! (www.greendimes.com)

Well, that’s it for this month of the Gliffy Newsletter. See you in December!

Chris & Clint, your friends at Gliffy
